Our home turns 150 years old this year. It’s hard to imagine a house standing that long. In 1875 the first light bulbs that would be able to light a home for a long period were created. Most people still relied on candles.

Of course, in 1875 our home wasn’t even a house yet. It was created for the conductors of the nearby railroad station to rest and recoup. And then later in the early 1900s it was used as a small one man barber shop. From the records I can tell that one family primarily owned it afterwards and passed it through 2 generations. At that point is when it was used as a rental and was not being taken care of properly. It was flipped and resold in the early 2000s.

We bought it from a family in 2019 and have started very slowly reworking and fixing so many years of covered up damage and shoddy work. As anyone with an old home knows it’s a labor of love and unfortunately money. Every year we focus on one “major” project and a few smaller scale. We’ve done a lot, and have a lot more to go. Here are some photos. Right now we are at 1090 sq ft and a covered porch approximately 8×16. 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Bedrooms and repairing the stairs are next “big” projects. Nothing is straight, the floors are old and give horrid splinters, but we love the charm of it all. We hope to someday add a living room that is larger in size.
